    Retired Employee | Langara Pioneer

    An “original Langaran,” who was part of the 1970 trek from Vancouver Community College’s old King Edward Campus, Valerie was the Dean of Student and Education Support Services for Langara College and had previously been the Registrar for the VCC Langara campus. Her impact on the College has been immeasurable. As the Registrar, she set up Langara’s student records systems and processes, many of which are still in use today. As Dean, she was responsible for all student and educational support services on campus which included the Library, Bookstore, the Registrar’s Office, Counselling, Health Services, Athletics, Daycare, Food Services, Disability Services, and First Nations Services. She was also a passionate champion for Langara outside of her work. In 1999, Valerie was awarded the Order of the Falcon for her support of the Langara Athletics department. She continues to support student success through her endowed award with the Langara College Foundation.

    As a driven leader with an entrepreneurial mindset, Jai is no stranger to the world of B2B sales. After attaining a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Langara, Jai proceeded to graduate from the esteemed Queen’s University Master of Management Innovation & Entrepreneurship program, specializing in corporate innovation. His unwavering commitment to achieving excellence and exceeding objectives did not stop with his experience at Fortune 500 companies. He is currently serving as a Commercial Client Manager for Western Canada at IBM. After being the VP Corporate Relations of the Young Investor Program Canada for the past five years—a not-for-profit organization dedicated to teaching financial literacy skills to youth—Jai now sits on the Board as a Senior Advisor helping to strategically grow the program. Jai strives to make the conversation surrounding financial literacy and investing in one’s future a priority amongst youth across the nation. He now channels his passion for giving back to the business community, that awarded him “Mentee of the Year” during his undergraduate studies, by mentoring students as a Vancouver Board of Trade Leaders of Tomorrow mentor.

  • Roger Holdstock

    Roger Holdstock

    Retired Employee | Film Studies Pioneer

    Roger was an English Instructor and Chair of the Langara English department. He made significant contributions to Langara’s Theatre Arts, Interdisciplinary, and Continuing Studies departments, introducing Film Studies as a discipline at Langara. Roger also developed the College’s first screenwriting course in collaboration with Studio 58–a project that would go on to become the Langara Film Arts program. He was an active faculty member serving on the Board of the Langara Faculty Association and founded the Langara Gala, an annual event that raised funds for student success. Roger continues to be a strong supporter of the College, funding The Roger Holdstock Scholarship that supports students in a film-related English course. Roger served as the Provincial Articulation Chair of Creative Writing and in 1992, he received the ACCC National Teaching Excellence Award, and in 2005, the Langara Teaching Excellence award. Roger currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of the DOXA Documentary Film Festival and Secretary on the Board of Directors of the 110 Arts Co-operative. He is a member of the folk band Fraser Union.
