Langara’s volunteer program VOLT went global in 2019, taking 14 Langarans (students and employees) on its first co-curricular international service trip as part of the Langara International Service Trip (LIST) program. To deliver the program, the College collaborated with the ME to WE organization, the first Canadian college to do so. The group traveled to the Masai Mara, immersing themselves in the local culture by spending time with children, helping on a local farm, and completing a volunteer project.
“The participants are more than travelers because they are there to learn about global issues, increase their awareness of themselves and others, and participate in change driven by the local community,” explained Maggie Stewart, VOLT Coordinator. “Volunteering internationally takes things to another level. It helps participants to develop as global citizens. In an increasingly connected world, the need for the next generation of professionals to be interculturally aware and agile is enormous.”
